So here's the idea I had on my walk yesterday – a "Startup Marketing" website and I got a fantastic domain name: startupmarket.ing. With this domain, I can create many grammatical slugs for it, so I see good SEO and GEO/AEO potential.

It is a website / platform / app that offers several things:
  1. startupmarket.ing/tools Best marketing tools, hand-curated by me.
  2. startupmarket.ing/books Most practical marketing books that I've read.
  3. startupmarket.ing/growth-hacks 200+ marketing growth hacks I've compiled over the years. Free and easily digestible short-form content.
  4. startupmarket.ing/academy A paid course where I teach solopreneurs everything I know about business marketing, sales, delivery, and operations.

And yes, I did soft-launch startupmarketing.tools last week before I thought of this new idea, and it serves the same function as startupmarket.ing/tools. That was an experiment with Dirstarter because its content generation and monetisation are fully automated. I'll continue to run it as a standalone site and see how the experiment goes.

The first 3 serve as SEO and lead magnets and I may make some grocery money from affiliate commissions. But the meat is in the Academy. I know how I want to structure the curriculum, but I've yet to decide how much to charge, and whether one-time or monthly.

I'll launch it in simple, lovable, and complete phases. So first up will be the tools. Then the books, etc etc.

Finally, I'll integrate AI in a "this is a handy assistant on a tight leash" way, and not in a "free-range robot on 'shrooms" way.

The primary target audience is solopreneurs, indie hackers, and bootstrappers marketing their own product.
Secondary audience is early-stage startup marketers and side-project builders.
Pain points
  • overwhelmed by tool choice
  • can't afford an agency
  • don't know what to do first
  • reading endlessly but not doing marketing
Jobs to be done: "Tell me which tool/book/tactic to use for my situation, and show me how to execute it."

It'll probably take 6-12 months to see some real results, and I'm okay with that because I have all the content up here 🙂👈 already.

What is my moat? Other than "I love hand-curating things instead of using a web scraper", I'm not sure there's such a thing anymore these days. I treat this as another one of my small bets.

Why I'm qualified? I have a degree in Marketing Management from University of Otago, New Zealand. I ran a successful restaurant for 13 years in Singapore, a brutally competitive market for F&B. I also ran a bakery for 7 of those years. I sold both businesses for 6 figures in 2019. Then I taught myself to code, and have been working in or building software since. In 2021, I was hired as General Manager for a restaurant software startup, where I helped market and grow the app to $400k/year revenue. On the side, I build my own small projects to varying levels of success, aimed at near-passive income.

So perhaps my moat is while most directories are commoditised, my story is not. I'm not just a theory merchant. I'm a real operator who has done my own marketing, sales, delivery, and operations across physical and software businesses.
